Joule Studio 2.0: Shaping the Autonomous Enterprise with SAP AI Agents

Following Part 1 of this blog series on the Autonomous Enterprise, which contextualizes the vision announced at SAP Sapphire 2026—and Part 2, which describes the organizational “homework” required on the path to implementation, we now take a deep dive into Joule Studio and, by extension, the agents themselves. After all, we are primarily talking about agents in the context of the Autonomous Enterprise. SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC), the cloud, and governance are the prerequisites. The agents are what actually deliver business value.

AI agents are at the heart of the strategy

SAP makes it very clear: AI agents are not just another feature among many, but the strategic core. They are the reason why the Business AI Platform, BDC, and Joule Work exist in this form at all. This vision goes far beyond the traditional understanding of AI: it aims not only to support daily work but to transform it.

The difference from AI assistants is fundamental. Assistants make suggestions, wait for a click, and hand the task back to the human. Agents are designed to guide the process from start to finish—with minimal human input, guided not by constant back-and-forth, but by clear guidelines that have been defined in advance. That is the core of it: Humans define the goal, guidelines, and exceptions; the agent carries them out.

To ensure this works on a large scale, SAP has clearly separated the roles: Joule assistants serve as the orchestrating layer that remains in dialogue with humans, while Joule agents are the specialized executors. An Assistant can coordinate multiple Agents—across system boundaries, departments, and vendors. It is precisely this division of labor that makes the goal of “transforming rather than supporting” a realistic possibility.

Industry AI: Now it's getting industry-specific

Another announcement that’s being underestimated: With Industry AI, SAP now plans to deliver industry-specific agents. Until now, most AI offerings have been horizontal in nature—covering finance, HR, and procurement across all industries. Now, AI agents are coming that are proficient in the language and processes of specific industries: retail differs from discrete manufacturing, and automotive differs from utilities. An agent in retail knows what an assortment cluster or a shopping cart anomaly is; an agent in manufacturing understands setup times, batches, and failure logic. It is precisely this industry-specific context that customers previously had to build themselves.

For SAP customers, this is a real game-changer: less customization effort, faster value from the standard solution. But—and this is crucial—SAP openly acknowledges that agents cannot be provided for every use case. And this is exactly where Joule Studio 2.0 comes into play.

Joule Studio 2.0: The most talked-about SAP tool right now

What I’ve gathered from recent conversations with customers is clear: Joule Studio 2.0 is the most in-demand tool in the SAP portfolio—scheduled for release in September 2026. The reason is obvious: It’s designed to do what many people know as “vibe coding” or “agent-based coding.”

At the heart of it all is intent-based development. Instead of starting with code, you describe the business intent in natural language—that is, the goal, not the solution. “I need an agent that checks new supplier invoices, flags discrepancies with the purchase order, and involves the purchasing department if in doubt”—that’s enough as a starting point. Joule Studio 2.0 translates this into a structured requirements document, enriching it with the architectural context from SAP Domain Models and the SAP Knowledge Graph, so you never start with a blank page.

This gives rise to the actual workflow, orchestrated with n8n, a workflow automation tool. SAP deliberately relies on widely used, open technologies here rather than an SAP-only solution—developers and partners can work with tools they’re already familiar with. Joule Studio builds the front end using either SAPUI5 or—through a new partnership with Vercel—modern web frameworks. This, too, sends a strong signal: Outside the SAP world, Vercel is the standard for fast, high-quality web frontends, and this integration shows that SAP is meeting developers where they are today. The generated code is deposited directly into the Git version control system and can then be further edited in any IDE. The output is therefore not a black box, but genuine, maintainable code.

Intent-Based Development with Joule Studio 2.0

Finally customizable: Extending SAP agents

For me, the most important aspect of the new AI-oriented SAP development environment is that agent extension and customization are built in from the very beginning. That may sound technical, but it has a major impact. One of the key weaknesses of previous SAP Business AI features was precisely that—the lack of adaptability to individual data structures and processes. Anyone who wanted to use the standard agents had to adapt their actual environment to the standard. With Joule Studio 2.0, that dynamic is now reversed.

Integration with SAP systems comes out-of-the-box; and additional data sources can be integrated via BDC, Integration Suite, or the Model Context Protocol (MCP). So the agent immediately understands your SAP environment, and the rest is provided to it in a structured format. The SAP AI Agent Hub manages and monitors the entire process—governance is integrated from the very first line of code and isn’t an afterthought.

Joule Studio 2.0 has the potential to revolutionize development and customization in the SAP environment—and to bring SAP up to par with the major AI tech players in terms of technology. For companies, this means the path to creating their own, customized agents is shorter than ever before. Those who prepare now—with clean data, clear guidelines for agents, and a clear idea of which gaps beyond the SAP standard need to be filled—will be up and running very quickly starting in September.
