What is Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT)?

Computer-Assisted Translation, also known as Computer-Aided Translation (CAT), is the translation of text performed by humans with the help of computer programs.

CAT tools refer to software applications that can be used to translate content from one language to another. These programs generally consist of translation memories and glossaries (terminology databases). Translation memories, for example, identify repeated sentences from previous translations and reuse them. This saves time and resources and minimizes costs. For many companies, inconsistencies in corporate wording can gradually arise. Terminology databases then ensure consistent communication in all languages, both in the current project and in subsequent projects. CAT tools are most often used by individual translators and editors. Systems used in larger companies are referred to as translation management systems (TMS).
