In today’s dynamic business world, companies are usually faced with considerable challenges: be it the realignment of the corporate structure, the optimization of internal processes or the digital transformation. Each of these situations requires sound leadership skills, specific specialist knowledge and extensive experience.

However, the fundamental specialist knowledge required to overcome the challenges is often lacking. Efficient interim management is an effective solution here, as interim managers can be deployed for specific tasks for a limited period of time and can contribute their expertise. During this time, they not only act as experienced consultants in the respective area. They can also integrate themselves operationally into the team, take on responsibility and implement tailor-made strategies.

  • What are the core skills of an interim manager?
  • What tasks does a temporary manager take on in the company?
  • What is the market situation in this respect?
  • What advantages does the use of an interim manager offer my company?

Fields of application and key areas of interim managers

Interim managers are active in a variety of areas, but especially when there is a need for action and special knowledge is required. They take on central tasks in strategic growth initiatives, such as the realignment or expansion of the company structure. One example of this is the introduction of strategic procurement in a company. Interim managers also offer effective support for:

  • market expansion
  • the development and implementation of digital transformation processes
  • the optimization of supply chains and operational processes

Interim managers can also fill management gaps in a targeted manner, for example when management positions need to be filled at short notice. To do this, they take on operational responsibility and drive projects forward. Even in crisis situations, such as restructuring or turnaround management, they can use their expertise to ensure stability and navigate the company through challenging times.

Competencies

  • Experience and expertise
  • Goal and result orientation
  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Strong communication skills and leadership qualities
  • Stress resistance and self-discipline

Areas of responsibility

The skills and responsibilities of interim managers are based on the following aspects.

  • Management and control of projects: Within projects, responsibility is assumed for implementation. In doing so, attention is paid to compliance with the project objectives and the defined time and budget frameworks. In addition, teams are coordinated, challenges are solved flexibly and the progress of work processes is continuously monitored.
  • Assumption of interim management roles: In order to ensure business operations during transition phases, the management of individual departments or business units is temporarily assumed.
  • Management and development of teams: Based on professional expertise, employees are given the opportunity to develop professionally and personally through targeted coaching and mentoring. This creates a motivating and competence-oriented working atmosphere.
  • Optimization and introduction of business processes:Inefficient processes are analyzed to identify weak points. On this basis, measures to increase efficiency are developed and new processes and technologies are implemented.
  • Reorganization and restructuring of departments:Structures and processes within specific divisions are redesigned. This includes the development and implementation of measures to adapt departments to changing market conditions or company situations.
  • Change management: The company is supported in relevant change processes by developing efficient strategies for the introduction of innovations. Employees are also actively involved in the process. Transparent communication between all departments is also ensured in order to minimize resistance and create lasting acceptance for new procedures.

The interim management market at a glance

The interim management market in Germany currently comprises around 12,000 interim managers, and the trend is steadily rising. Primarily corporate groups, but also more and more medium-sized companies, rely on the support of interim managers. This enables them to recruit highly qualified specialists and managers at short notice for specific projects or to deal with crisis situations.

Using expertise efficiently: the advantages of interim managers

The use of a temporary management team brings your company numerous advantages, especially in times when change or bottlenecks characterize or affect your work processes. Their specific expertise and results-oriented approach are a key tool for overcoming acute challenges and implementing projects.

  • Expertise and industry knowledge: Interim managers have built up specific expertise through many years of experience in various industries and projects. They have valuable skills that are precisely tailored to the respective requirements.
  • Rapid availability and flexibility: Interim managers specialize in short-term assignments, which is why they are available within a very short time. They can adapt flexibly to the company’s conditions and needs and contribute suitable expertise.
  • Cost control and budget transparency: The duration and costs of assignments are determined in advance, which enables precise budget planning. Companies know exactly what costs they will incur and can therefore plan with financial certainty.
  • Risk minimization and crisis management: Interim managers act quickly, decisively and neutrally. They help to minimize risks arising from management bottlenecks, organizational changes or crisis situations. At the same time, they help to ensure stability.

Successful practical experience

Our experienced consultants have already successfully supported companies as interim managers in numerous projects and a wide range of tasks. This ensures sustainable and efficient implementation, especially in conjunction with previous projects.

For example, the successful roll-out of a new S&OP process was supported by the deployment of one of our S&OP experts as an interim manager. This manager helped to manage the process and reduce the boundaries between the specialist departments. He also supported the processes over several cycles until process stability was achieved.

In another project, an interim manager supported the implementation of the previously planned reorganization of the procurement organization. The buyers were introduced to the new processes, operational support was provided and the long-term empowerment of the team was strengthened.

However, a previous project is not a mandatory requirement for the deployment of our interim managers. At another client, an interim manager was brought in when the procurement department was facing considerable challenges. The switch from in-house production to external production led to quality deficiencies and delivery delays. Our additional expertise enabled these challenges to be overcome and sustainably optimized through an operational redesign of strategic procurement processes.
