What is an asset?

An asset is, according to ISO 55000, an object with potential or actual value to an organization. This includes physical, financial, intangible, and other resources.

In the context of Asset Lifecycle Management, maintenance plays a central role – particularly for physical assets such as machines, equipment, infrastructure and buildings. Their operational capability and lifespan must be specifically maintained through appropriate measures. Financial and intangible assets play a subordinate role here, as they do not require physical maintenance.
