What is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?

Natural Language Processing (NLP) refers to the ability of computer systems to capture, process, understand, and respond to spoken words.

Within the field of NLP, Natural Language Understanding (NLU) is particularly important. NLU refers to the actual understanding of language—not just the meaning of individual words, but also the grammatical and pragmatic context in which they were uttered. One example would be AI- and machine learning-based solutions such as “Alexa” or “Siri,” which are beginning to understand entire sentences and their respective context.
