AI Capabilities in Internal IT
DATEV has defined its AI strategy for internal IT in just three months
DATEV has been consistently driving AI transformation and adoption across the entire company for some time now. Another step along this path was to establish a shared understanding within the internal IT department regarding the use of AI—both for in-house solutions and for improving internal process efficiency. In collaboration with valantic, DATEV’s existing AI strategy was further developed for the internal IT department.

DATEV is one of Europe’s largest IT cooperatives and a leading provider of software, cloud services, and IT services for tax advisors, certified public accountants, attorneys, and their clients. With over 9,000 employees, more than 40,000 members, and over 1 million customers, DATEV is one of the most significant software companies in the German-speaking world. The company is currently undergoing a fundamental shift in its portfolio and technology, which is consistently moving toward the cloud. AI is to be considered a strategic lever from the very beginning.
A Shared AI Vision for Internal IT
Challenge & Starting Point
DATEV’s internal IT department has evolved over many years in response to increasing demands on IT solutions. Several product owners are responsible for standalone applications within a complex system landscape. At the same time, DATEV already had an AI strategy in place, as well as various initiatives aimed at AI enablement.
The challenge for the internal IT department was to adapt this existing AI strategy to the department’s specific requirements and context and to establish a shared understanding of the future use of AI.
Project Goal
The goal of the project was to clarify DATEV’s existing AI strategy for the Internal IT department and to create a shared framework for working with AI. To this end, the project aimed to develop a shared vision, a self-concept for Internal IT within the AI context, and strategic areas of focus for further development.

Procedure
valantic supported DATEV through several workshops, preliminary interviews, and by consolidating the results to help define the existing AI strategy for internal IT. Together with product owners, the team reflected on the current situation, discussed expectations and prospects, and developed a shared understanding of the role of AI in internal IT.
Results
Over the course of three months of intensive collaboration, a shared vision emerged, along with a definition of the role of internal IT in the context of AI, a prioritized backlog of initiatives, and four strategic areas of focus for further AI enablement:
- Business Partners and Processes
- People and Culture
- Data and Systems
- AI Standards
The results serve as a framework for further AI enablement and the design of AI activities within Internal IT. They create a common foundation and help place existing and future AI initiatives within a shared context.
The project demonstrated that by involving various stakeholders early on, it is possible to develop a shared vision and viable areas of action for AI enablement within a short period of time.
