The zero release of IBM’s BI suite Cognos Analytics 11.2 is a promising start to the new version. These are the new features at a glance.
In mid-May, IBM launched the first release of the long-awaited new version of its Cognos Analytics BI software suite. Version 11.2 will receive official LTS status next year (“long-term support”) and will replace the current version 11.1.7 after six months. By then, approximately quarterly minor releases will bring new features and improvements.
For a “zero release” version, 11.2.0 is surprisingly stable and error-free. That gives us hope for the further development process.
The most striking innovation is certainly the new design, which is more clearly oriented to IBM’s carbon design than that of Version 11.1.7. In addition, the portal has been thoroughly revised, and IBM has also refocused on virtues of Cognos 10-time.
There is also news under the hood: Dashboards now load up to 59% faster, which definitely makes work more enjoyable.
In the new Version 11.2, IBM wants to focus more on artificial intelligence and data science to support users more effectively when using Cognos Analytics. IBM’s has promised that its proven implementation of artificial intelligence, Watson, would make Cognos Analytics smarter.
In Cognos Analytics, Watson makes the built-in software wizard smarter, helping users create analytics. Artificial intelligence now also supports the analysis of online analytical processing (OLAP) data sources, which represent the data material as multidimensional cubes.
Watson Studio can now be integrated as an external application, and Watson Studio notebooks can be imported into Cognos Analytics.
Long promised, the new mobile app is finally available for Android and for on-premise installations. In it, ready-made visualizations with dashboards and explorations can be collected as so-called “pins” and arranged in “boards.” Secure authentication is handled with a QR code and a security token.
All in all, a good first release that looks much more sophisticated than the same release number in Versions 11.0 and 11.1. We are curious to see what else IBM will add over the next few months.
