Navigating the SEO AI Jungle – How companies gain visibility for ChatGPT & Co.

For a long time, digital visibility was closely linked to traditional search engines such as Google. For years, organic rankings, technical optimization and the right keyword strategy formed the basis for content being found and reaching the right target groups in the B2B environment.

However, with the emergence of generative AI and dialog-based search systems, the playing field is expanding significantly. Platforms such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and the new Google search integrate language models that not only display information, but also actively process, evaluate and place it in new contexts.

This development is changing the way content is read and found. Companies are increasingly faced with the question of how they can further develop their SEO strategy so that it remains visible and relevant in AI-based environments.

This is not about a complete reorientation, but about targeted additions. Structuring content more clearly, making contexts more comprehensible and preparing trustworthy information in such a way that it can also be understood by machines.

This article shows what this means in concrete terms and how established SEO concepts can be meaningfully combined with AI optimization.

AI changes SEO – but does not replace it

Today, search engines no longer just provide lists, but answers. Systems such as Google SGE, ChatGPT or Perplexity combine web search with generative models and thus offer users direct, often context-rich access to information. This reduces the number of clicks on organic links, as many questions are already answered on the search results page.

For companies, this raises a simple but crucial question: how do you remain visible when search results are increasingly generated by AI?

The good news is that classic SEO remains relevant. The even better news is that it can be expanded with targeted measures that make content understandable and findable for language models. Anyone still planning to “only” rank in the top 10 is thinking too short-sightedly. The new paradigm is to appear in AI overviews or to be cited as a source.

SEO meets AI: What’s behind LLMO, GEO & Co.

With the increasing integration of language models in search systems, new requirements for content are emerging and with them new terms. Two of these are currently in particular focus: LLMO and GEO.

LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) describes the targeted optimization of content so that it can be meaningfully interpreted by language models such as GPT-4, Claude or Gemini and, in the best case, used as a source. In addition to the right keywords, a clear structure, comprehensible context and reliable information are particularly important here. Content should answer specific questions, be clearly structured and easy to process by machine, for example through subheadings, structured data or source references.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) goes one step further. It not only looks at the model itself, but also at the entire search system based on generative AI, such as Google SGE or Perplexity. GEO asks the question: How must content be structured so that it remains visible in the overall picture of these systems? Semantic linking, structured data and formats that are preferably processed by AI play a decisive role here.

New reality: AI overviews and decoupled visibility

This change is particularly evident at Google itself. With the new AI Overviews (AIO), the search results page is changing massively. Instead of blue links, Google presents an AI-generated answer, often including recommendations, quotes and dynamic snippets. Organic hits slide further down the page and the conventional SEO click logic is shaken.

This has two major effects:

  1. Click-through rate losses on search results pages because many searchers remain in the overview and no longer click on the search results.
  2. New visibility logic: Those who are referenced there gain reach without being “ranked” in the conventional sense.

For companies, this means a shift in goal: from rankings to references. Visibility is no longer achieved through SEO tactics alone, but also through the structural and semantic quality of the content. The demands for precision, clarity and trustworthiness are increasing noticeably.

What can be optimized in concrete terms?

In the B2B environment in particular, with its complex topics, high information requirements and long purchasing processes, there are numerous ways to prepare content in such a way that it is easier to read and use for large language models (LLMs).

 

What is possible and where do the limits (still) lie?

The integration of generative AI into search opens up new opportunities, but it also shifts the previous rules of the game. Visibility is no longer only achieved through rankings in conventional search results, but also through contextual mentions, quotes or references in AI-generated answers. What sounds like more reach at first glance brings new challenges at second glance.

Visibility is decoupled

A central problem: there is an unclear time span between the publication of content and its possible use in language models. The so-called lead times. Language models such as GPT-4 or Gemini 2.5 rely on information that has already been indexed and is often weeks or even months old. This means that even if content is up-to-date, high-quality and optimized, it can take time before it is indexed in the model or even considered at all. This makes it more difficult for companies to react promptly and decouples action and result to a greater extent than was previously the case.

Control is limited

There are also limitations at the control level. While it was usually possible to optimize for specific rankings or snippets in SEO, this precision is missing in the AI context. There is no longer a ranking in the classic sense, no guaranteed positions on page 1, but a dynamic selection based on relevance, clarity, context and trust. Who, where and when appears in an AI response is difficult to predict and even more difficult to control.

Monitoring becomes a key competence

In this uncertainty, monitoring becomes a strategic foundation. Companies should pay more attention to the following questions:

  • Which AI systems crawl my content? Log analyses for crawlers (e.g. GPTBot, Google Extended, PerplexityBot) help to understand whether and how content is being absorbed.
  • Which sources are ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AIO currently citing in my topic area? Regular spot checks and prompt analyses show whether you are being referenced and by whom.
  • Which traffic flows come via AI platforms? Even if ChatGPT traffic is not directly reported in common web analysis tools, UTM parameters, referrer evaluations or bot behavior can provide valuable information.
  • How does Google AI Overviews (AIO) change visibility? AIOs in particular are displacing conventional search hits. Close SERP monitoring helps to detect changes at an early stage.

Monitoring is no substitute for strategy, but without monitoring we are flying blind. Only through data do we gain the necessary visibility to optimize content effectively.

Quality beats speed

Despite all the automation, the following applies: if you only produce content for machines, you lose. This is because AI systems not only analyze keywords or backlinks, but also prefer patterns that indicate structure, context and relevance. Quickly generated texts without recognizable depth often remain invisible. What really counts is a clear argumentation, comprehensible sources and content that is well embedded because it is more understandable and usable for both humans and models.

Conclusion: More visibility through smart expansion

Combining traditional SEO with AI-supported optimization is not a radical change, but a logical next step. Companies have the opportunity to prepare content not only for humans, but also for machines and thus become visible in a new digital space.

One thing counts above all: not replacing, but complementing. Classic SEO remains the foundation, while LLMO, GEO and AIO serve as extensions. If you start strategically linking these building blocks today, you will lay the foundation for sustainable visibility in an increasingly AI-driven search landscape.
