From rule-based automation to adaptive AI agents

In the first part of our blog series, we explained that an AI agent is a software program that uses artificial intelligence to carry out specific tasks without the need for human intervention. In this sense, AI agents represent a specific form of automation. But what exactly sets them apart from traditional rule-based automation?

The first part of our blog series focused on the opportunities of using AI within Optimizely’s CMP. It covered the functions of the AI Opal and the role of agents.

AI agents – more efficiency with less effort

AI agents go beyond rule-based automation, which relies on standardized, predefined actions:

  • Flexibility: respond to new situations in real time
  • Learning ability: continuously improve by analyzing past results
  • Control/effort: controlled via prompts or defined goals
  • Personalization: tailor messaging based on user behavior
  • Scalability: handle complex tasks and a wide variety of use cases

Example: While rule-based automation sends a standardized welcome email for every new newsletter signup, an AI agent analyzes user behavior on the website and personalizes the content accordingly. Over time, it learns which content performs well and continuously adapts it.

Overview of Optimizely’s AI agents

Optimizely has integrated a wide range of specialized AI agents into its CMP to support the entire content marketing process:

  • Opal: the central AI instance for generating content ideas, topic clusters, and briefings at the push of a button
  • Content Generator: creates first drafts based on briefings and user intent – perfect for sparking creative content
  • Campaign Kits: automatically builds full end-to-end campaigns – including tasks, briefings, content, and social media promotion
  • Industry Marketer: adapts content and tone to specific industries and target audiences – without the need for subject matter experts
  • Asset Management: automatically tags and optimizes media assets for better discoverability and reusability
  • Personalization: dynamically adjusts content and recommendations based on user behavior, preferences, and conversion data
  • SDR Outreach: supports personalized research and outreach with data-driven suggestions
  • Customer Marketing: uses historical customer data to answer questions like “Which solution worked for similar clients?”
  • Experimentation: A strategic bot with in-app guidance for planning, running, and evaluating content experiments. Via the additional tool opal-experiments.web.app, proactive suggestions for A/B testing or new content formats can also be provided on request.

Multi-agent collaboration: an orchestrated system

The AI agents in Optimizely CMP don‘t operate in isolation – they work as a coordinated team. Each agent builds on the output of the previous one, completing tasks in a logical sequence. This is known as multi-agent collaboration. For example, a target audience defined by the Persona Agent is picked up by the Content Briefing Agent, which then initiates text production based on that input. This interconnected workflow enables efficient and consistent content creation. Throughout this process, marketing teams remain fully in control: They define workflows, assign tasks, and determine when human review is required.

Optimizely also places a strong emphasis on data privacy and complies with international standards such as the GDPR. By integrating the company’s own consent management platform, Cookie Information, user consent can be collected and documented in a legally compliant manner.

Conclusion: benefits of using AI agents in Optimizely CMP

The integration of specialized AI agents into Optimizely CMP streamlines content marketing in several ways:

  • Increased efficiency: automation of repetitive tasks
  • Improved quality: continuous refinement of content through adaptive systems
  • Personalization: targeted, audience-specific messaging
  • Compliance: adherence to data privacy regulations

With Optimizely CMP, marketing teams can implement their strategies more effectively while maintaining a strong focus on privacy and compliance.
