What is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union regulation that has been in force since May 2018. It aims to standardize the processing of personal data within the EU. This is intended to ensure a high level of protection for personal data on the one hand and the free movement of data in the European Single Market on the other.

The GDPR obliges companies and organizations to take extensive measures to protect the rights of data subjects and prevent data protection violations. Violations of the requirements can be sanctioned by the responsible supervisory authorities with considerable fines.
