Data Breach Coaching

What is Breach Coaching resp. Data Breach Coaching?

Breach Coaching or Data Breach Coaching refers to the professional support provided by a breach coach in the event of a data protection incident in a company.

Cyber attacks or negligence can lead to sensitive business or customer data being lost or falling into the wrong hands. Such incidents represent a serious emergency, as companies are legally obliged by data protection regulations to protect this data.

The aim of breach coaching is to minimize the damage caused by the data loss and to initiate the most effective response possible. In doing so, data protection requirements such as compliance and GDPR regulations must be taken into account. At the same time, care is taken to ensure that the company’s operational processes are not impaired.

What does a Breach Coach do?

A Breach Coach ensures that a company can respond to a data breach as effectively as possible and in compliance with legal and compliance requirements. This is done as part of Breach Coaching.

The role of Breach Coach is often taken on by data or media lawyers with special expertise in information security. They have in-depth knowledge of reporting obligations and how to deal with supervisory authorities. At the same time, their legal duty of confidentiality offers additional security, especially when handling sensitive data.

As a kind of project manager, the breach coach manages the company’s response to the incident. They develop the strategy and procedure and coordinate a team of IT experts, forensic experts, lawyers and communication experts.

A Breach Coach thus relieves the burden on a company’s employees, who often do not have the necessary expertise to deal with a data breach in accordance with the GDPR and can therefore devote themselves to their actual business tasks.

Where to find a Breach Coach?

A Breach Coach is often provided by cyber security or data insurance companies.

In an emergency, insurance companies provide their customers with specialized crisis managers to minimize the damage caused. Data loss can cause high costs due to the interruption of business processes, fines, claims for damages or non-GDPR-compliant processes – both for the affected company and for the insurance company.

Insurance companies organize contact if necessary and contribute their experience in dealing with such crises. For effective support, those responsible should have all relevant information about the incident ready from the first contact.
