What is an Application Programming Interface (API)?

An Application Programming Interface (API) is a programming interface.

An API is a component of a program that provides other programs with an interface for exchanging data, through which a software system can be integrated. An API enables a program to connect to other programs or systems at the source code level and facilitates real-time communication between two programs or systems.
