The new EU regulation for deforestation-free supply chains

Implementation of the EUDR obligations

As part of the EU Green Deal, the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) aims to prevent illegal deforestation and guarantee this to consumers in the EU.

From the end of 2025, the directive will affect companies of all sizes that market, supply or process raw materials defined in the EUDR (wood, cocoa, coffee, soy, palm oil, cattle, rubber) as part of their business activities.

Early action urgently required

Affected companies must be able to provide proof of deforestation-free status for all deliveries of the defined raw materials, whereby various due diligence obligations of the EUDR must be fulfilled:

Information requirements include a detailed description of the products concerned including, for example, country of origin and geolocation

Analysis of collected information and risk assessment based on predefined criteria

Taking measures to reduce risk and implementing a risk management system

Comprehensive reporting obligations for individual deliveries of goods and the preparation of an annual report

In order to implement the due diligence obligations under the EUDR, companies face major challenges related to the complexity of global supply chains (e.g. data availability, transparency, data quality, cooperation with suppliers) and the availability of internal resources (time, financial resources and technical expertise). In addition, non-compliance with due diligence obligations can result in significant fines of up to 4% of the company’s annual turnover and sales bans.

With in-depth expertise in sustainable purchasing and supply chain management and in the pragmatic implementation of corporate environmental and social due diligence obligations, valantic supports you end-to-end and individually tailored to your needs in implementing the requirements of the EUDR.
