Standardized management model

Standardized supplier evaluation at Evonik

Evonik was preparing for its IPO and was aiming for standardized supplier management across all business units. Together with valantic, existing approaches were systematically analyzed, compared and merged into a standardized, performance-based model – for more transparency, controllability and strategic orientation in procurement.

About the company

Evonik is a leading global specialty chemicals group with over 35,000 employees and sales of more than 12.7 billion euros. In preparation for the planned IPO, the company worked with valantic to develop a group-wide, standardized supplier management system. By analyzing existing concepts from eight business areas, a standardized model for evaluating supplier performance was created – as a basis for more transparency and strategic control potential in procurement.

The project

The challenge

In the run-up to the planned IPO, Evonik’s risk management was to be significantly improved. However, the eight business units had different supplier management approaches with partly heterogeneous evaluation criteria and KPIs. The aim was to create a standardized, reliable system for evaluating supplier performance and to enable Group-wide transparency regarding optimization potential.

Consulting approach

1. Analysis of existing concepts

  • Standardized interviews with over 20 stakeholders from 8 divisions on the current situation
  • Review and evaluation of existing documents (e.g. scorecards, manuals, …)
  • Discussion and comparison of the interview results on the basis of standardized evaluation criteria

2. Group-wide concept evaluation

  • Structured analysis and comparison of all existing supplier management approaches
  • Evaluation according to clear key figures (e.g. number of evaluated suppliers, KPI depth …)

3. Development of a standardized model

  • Selection of proven components from the existing concepts
  • Consolidation into a standardized, performance-based management model
