With over 2,500 employees and an annual turnover of more than 100 million euros, Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) is a key player in public transportation in Bremen. BSAG is pursuing ambitious decarbonization goals to implement the green transport transition. Together with valantic, a company-wide ESG transformation programme was set up that anchors sustainability strategically and organizationally.
Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) was founded in 1876 and is headquartered in Bremen. The company specializes in local public transport and operates an extensive range of bus and streetcar lines in Bremen and the surrounding area. Sustainability is a central part of the corporate strategy. BSAG uses modern, energy-efficient vehicles, takes responsibility within its supply chain, and pursues transparent goals as part of its sustainability program. With more than 2,200 employees, BSAG is one of the largest transport companies in northern Germany. Sales and operations are managed locally through its network in Bremen, in cooperation with the Bremen Lower Saxony Transport Association. Routes and timetables are continuously adjusted to meet demand and infrastructure conditions.
The challenge
As a regional transport company, BSAG is at the forefront of Bremen’s mobility transition, with the strategic goal of becoming fully climate-neutral by 2038 at the latest. However, the expansion of a climate-friendly mobility offering collided with budget restrictions, regulatory requirements (e.g. LkSG, CSRD) and complex stakeholder expectations. A company-wide anchoring of sustainability was necessary in order to successfully implement the transformation under difficult conditions.
Consulting approach
1. ESG risk analysis and materiality assessment
2. Strategic ESG roadmap
3. Development of an ESG governance structure
Solution & results in detail
A comprehensive sustainability transformation program was developed as part of the project. The automated risk analysis created transparency about potential ESG risks in the supply chain. A strategic ESG roadmap enabled targeted planning for compliance with CSRD and the EU taxonomy. ESG governance was established as an organization-wide management model, creating a basis for BSAG’s sustainable mobility strategy.
“The special thing about the collaboration with valantic is the combination of in-depth technical expertise paired with tangible implementation strength. It is precisely this mix that enables us to work together on a long-term and trusting basis and to pragmatically integrate our ESG topics end-to-end.” – BSAG
Conclusion
With valantic, BSAG has established a future-oriented ESG strategy that meets regulatory requirements and at the same time contributes to the realization of Bremen’s transport transition. The structural anchoring of sustainability creates security of action despite political and financial challenges.
