The challenge

As connected vehicles generate more sensitive data, a leading German carmaker needed to develop a secure, compliant charging platform in the cloud. Key challenges included:

Keeping Data in Germany

Ensuring all data stayed within the Frankfurt AWS region, with no uncontrolled cross-border transfers.

Controlled Access

Limiting system and data access strictly to authorized personnel from the company and valanticand never AWS or third parties.

Meeting Regulations

Complying with GDPR, BDSG, and preparing for the upcoming EU Data Act.

Always Available

Ensuring the system could run without interruption, even during failures.

Clear Oversight

Providing full transparency and traceability for audits and accountability.

Avoiding Lock-in

Designing the system to stay flexible and avoid over-reliance on specific vendors.

Consulting approach

Sovereignty-by-Design on AWS

valantic built the solution with “sovereignty-by-design” in mind—meaning data control, security, and compliance were baked into every step, from architecture to daily operations. Using AWS services in the Frankfurt (eu-central-1) region, the solution keeps all data in Germany while applying strong safeguards to maintain digital independence and regulatory alignment.

  1. 1

    Data Stays in Germany

All data is stored and processed within the Frankfurt AWS region. The network is designed to keep traffic private and local—never leaving the AWS environment or crossing borders unless explicitly allowed. This includes secure cloud storage (S3), databases (Aurora, DynamoDB), and network communications.

  2. 2

    Access Is Strictly Controlled

Only authorized users can access systems and data, based on clear role definitions. Multi-factor authentication and strict permissions make sure people only see what they need to do their jobs—nothing more. Even AWS staff can’t access sensitive data without the customer’s permission.

  3. 3

    Everything Is Encrypted and Auditable

Customer-managed encryption keys ensure full control over data privacy. Operational access is logged and monitored, with tools like AWS CloudTrail and Config providing a detailed record for audits. Secure access methods like Session Manager eliminate open ports and risky credentials.

  4. 4

    Designed for Resilience

All core services run across multiple zones in the Frankfurt region, ensuring they stay available even during outages. Auto-scaling, load balancing, and backups keep the system responsive and protected from disruptions.

  5. 5

    Built-In Security and Compliance

The solution uses advanced AWS tools to detect threats, enforce policies, and ensure compliance with GDPR and other regulations. This includes firewalls, monitoring dashboards, and support for anonymizing sensitive data.
