The Wish for New Work
What is important to employees when choosing a job? A good work-life balance and predictable working hours were cited by 85% of respondents as selection criteria, flexible working hours were mentioned by 79% and the starting salary was important for 73% (Federal Statistical Office/Bitkom).
In 2019, 13% of employees worked from home, in 2021 it was 25%. More than double that number, namely 56%, would like to have a permanent entitlement to mobile working (Batten & Company).
These figures illustrate employees‘ desire for new approaches to the working world. Whether it is the possibility of moving away from fixed and rigid work locations and times or the associated optimization of the work-life balance, which is becoming increasingly important. Today – and in the future – people are striving for free, modern working models.
What is New Work and a Future Workplace?
New Work is a process, not a product.
New Work is a term with a broad meaning that can be interpreted in a subjective manner. The spiritual father of the New Work culture is the social philosopher Prof. Dr. Frithjof Bergmann. He first developed the progressive work approach in 1984, which states that New Work is based on the three pillars of creativity, autonomy and freedom.
In our understanding, New Work is the epitome of the fundamental and structural transformation of the world of work, which is intended to create a value-oriented and innovative working environment. Flexible office spaces allow agile working in a modern environment. This new understanding of work means considering the balance of everyone’s interests in order to increase satisfaction and the productivity associated with it. New Work therefore represents a move away from traditional workplace concepts.
The causes of this change are caused by global influencing factors such as globalization, demographic and value changes and digitalization. In particular, the further development of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT and robotics is playing its part in changing the world of work.
