Coop City relies on SAP Commerce for its online store

Coop City is the second largest department store chain in Switzerland and known for its excellent shopping experience. To further optimize this experience in the future, an online store was launched in cooperation with valantic – based on the existing Coop Shop platforms, using SAP Commerce.

About Coop City

Coop is probably a household name to every Swiss citizen. In the course of its more than 150-year history, the once small consumer cooperative has developed into an internationally active retail and wholesale company.

Within the group, Coop City is the comprehensive department store for beauty, fashion, home and food. Most locations also have a Coop restaurant and a Coop Depositenkasse counter. In some cases, other services are offered, such as advance ticket sales. In short, Coop City offers the perfect shopping experience – all under one roof.

The challenge

A total of 30 Coop City locations make the company the second-largest department store chain in the country. That’s big – but not big enough. Together with valantic, Coop City wanted to launch an online store as an additional sales channel to stationary retail.

modern, friendly and sustainable

We want to offer our customers the most flexible shopping experience possible. With the Coop City online store, we are taking another important step in this direction.

The solution:

An online store based on the already existing Coop Shop platforms – coop.ch, Coop Bau+Hobby, Import Parfumerie, Christ Uhren und Schmuck, Livique, Lumimart, including gift card and premium store – developed with SAP Commerce (version 20.05). In addition, the “new” sales channel had to be connected to existing systems such as SAP ERP.

Noteworthy: The online store for Coop City was developed completely remotely using the Scrum methodology and SAP Commerce. A team consisting of front-end developers from raffiniert media AG as well as Java developers from Coop-IT and valantic were involved.

The result is impressive: Around 13,000 items are available in the online store – including popular products from Coop’s own brands as well as products from other brands in various product ranges. Purchases are either delivered to the customer’s home or can be picked up at one of Coop’s 450 pick-up points.

  • possibility to advertise and thus become more visible to search engines, magic word: SEO
  • more advertising opportunities for suppliers
  • foundation for future omnichannel approaches

The biggest advantage is certainly that customers are offered more transparency regarding product information. It is also possible to pick up online orders at Coop City pick-up stations. A “classic” Click & Collect option is in the planning stages.

Future outlook

Speaking of the future, what is the next step for the newly created online store? The next milestones have already been set:
